The Internet I grew up with was always pretty casual about authentication: as long as you were willing to take some basic steps to prevent abuse (make an account with a pseudonym, or just refrain from spamming), many sites seemed happy to allow somewhat-anonymous usage. Over the past couple of years this pattern has changed. In part this is because sites like to collect data, and knowing your identity makes you more lucrative as an advertising target. However a more recent driver of this change is the push for legal age verification.
