When the Java Platform rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s, one of its main catalysts were Java applets and the Applet API. Java applets were small Java programs that could be embedded in web pages and run in a web browser, allowing developers to create interactive web applications. They were widely used for things like games, animations, and other interactive content on the web. People who weren’t Java programmers at all at least knew the name ‘Java’ from their browser because of applets! (in roughly the same way as kids these days know about Java’s existence because of a game called Minecraft.)
